Cedar Creek

8 x 10 oil on linen panel

A gurgling creek runs through the area where I walk and live and it's captivated me for some time, so I decided to tackle it.  Not happy with what I got, but it's always worth doing because you figure out some baffling little detail or other.

  1. What medium are you using? And how long does it take for you to do a paining this size?

  2. This is oil paint, and it takes me anywhere from 4 hours to 3 months to do a painting this size! It all depends on my frame of mind and how often I walk away in disgust. I dislike painting small and I'm working through the remainder of my small panels/canvases. I'll never paint anything smaller than 11 x 14 again!

  3. I don't like small canvas's either. Even 11 x14 is too small for me. I love working in oil. I love the foliage on the sides of your creek and the creek itself looks great. The trees are a little flat but that's the only thing I think could be tweaked.

  4. It's lovely and I've seem some of the greatest paintings done in small format. I began working in small format nd then switched to larger and find I did my best work small. Well, maybe not best but the work I enjoyed more anyway.

  5. Boy - do I ever understand, Lauren. The hardest thing I have ever done in painting was learning to paint small and have it look like a larger painting. It took a long time. Much easier to work large and it definitely has more impact.
